I was employed to cover maternity leave at Sage Group Plc. in the customised stationery department as a DTP Operator dealing directly with customers and providing them with bespoke stationery compatible with Sage software.
Customers' bespoke stationery orders were taken by the telesales team and proofs delivered by PDFs via email. Amendments were taken 'live' over the telephone and completed orders printed in-house via CTP (computer-to-plate). Four-colour process work was outsourced to a regular printer and it was one of my duties to liaison with this printer and track progress of jobs. In this fast-paced, high volume environment, being a strong team player was important and my fluent knowledge of software packages such as Freehand, Photoshop, Acrobat and QuarkXpress was essential. My commercial pre-press experience proved invaluable in dealing with external printers and bureaus, as well as providing design consultation both by telephone and face to face. Whilst at Sage I also completed a Telephone Sales course – an internal two day course covering telephone sales techniques and customer service.
